Michael LaFontaine launched his career in Michigan's bustling automotive industry in the 1960s when he started selling Volkswagen models. After over a decade in the business, Michael couldn't ignore his dream of seeing his name on the marquee. In 1980, that dream became a reality when Michael opened his first Toyota dealership in Dearborn. His goal was to build a team dedicated to offering a unique customer experience, treating everyone like family, and making the process of buying a vehicle rewarding, exciting, and fun.

Michael's vision reached new heights in 1984 when his wife, Maureen, opened a second dealership in Milford. Sharing her husband's passion and dream, Maureen put her heart and soul into building a dealership with a small-town feel. Maureen's success was unparalleled, as she sold more Cadillac, Pontiac, and GMC models in the first month than the dealership had sold the previous year. This marked a pivotal point for the LaFontaines and laid the groundwork for the LaFontaine Automotive Group.

The LaFontaines gradually expanded and welcomed their children, Ryan and Kelley, into the family business. Ryan started working at the dealership at 15, learning the ins and outs of each department before earning a sales position at 21. He was later named General Manager of the flagship GM store in Highland and immediately set his sights on becoming the leading volume dealer in the nation. Ryan achieved that goal in 2009, with LaFontaine dealerships leading the nation in Cadillac, GMC, and Buick sales and earning prestigious GM Dealer of the Year titles.

Founded in 1980 by Michael Sr. and Maureen LaFontaine, the nationally-recognized LaFontaine Automotive Group now includes 54 retail franchises, 8 collision centers and 41 Michigan retail locations. The Group employs nearly 3,000 individuals.
